In general, homestay is better when you just arrive in Australia but in the long term sharehouse wins for several reasons.

Here are some of them:

Homestay

Pros:
- You have a family to help you when you just arrive in the country;
- You do not need to worry about cooking or washing clothes;
- Safer to book a bedroom if you are overseas;
- You can change if you do not like the family;
- Usually you have your own bedroom;

Cons:
- The homestay address sometimes is not close to your school;
- The price is higher than a share house;
- You need to have the meals at the same time of the family;

Sharehouse

Pros:
- Usually it is near the central city and your school;
- Cheaper than homestay;
- You have your own times for cooking;

Cons:

- Hard to book a place if you are overseas;
- The place can be a mess if there is no rules;
- Sometimes too many people living at the same address to reduce rent price;
- You may not speak English if you live with people of the same country
